Action Alert- Prisoners Assaulted in 2 incidents at SCI Greene

Starting Thursday, October 1: Call DOC to ask "What's going on at Greene?"

According to prisoner reports, September was a lively month for abusive staff in the RHU at SCI Greene! Two recent attacks by guards on prisoners--occurring within a day of each other--testify to the continued conditions of racist terror perpetrated by staff at Greene:

Sunday, 9/13-- Leonard Young was beaten by a cell extraction team under the command of Lt. Barkefelt. During the attack he was struck in the hands and wrist by an officer wielding a nightstick & injured so badly that he needed to be taken to the infirmary. There, he was held in a "hard cell" without a mattress with only a smock gown to cover himself. (Leonard's DOC# is GN-9516)

Monday, 9/14-- Keith Anderson was beaten and choked (while handcuffed) by CO Shaffer in on the way to the morning exercise period. The attack was in retaliation for grievances that Anderson's filed for a series of religious and racially-based threats made by Shaffer. During the assault, Anderson sustained injuries to his head, shoulder, and jaw, and is now suffering from hearing loss to his left ear. As of Friday the 18th, he was still on "restricted movement" and had not been taken to the medical department. (Keith's DOC# is AS-3252)

Though it's not always possible to be certain of the accuracy of events reported from within prison, these accounts have been corroborated by other prisoners and are to be taken seriously.

Call SCI Greene, Secretary Beard, and the Office of Professional Responsibility and make your voice heard! Demand to know what's being done to put a stop to the racist violence by guards in the RHU!

tips for calling:

Keep notes- write down the names of the DOC staff you talk to & what they say (as much as possible).

Don't let them brush you off! If someone you're trying to reach isn't available, ask to be put on hold or offer to call back at a more convenient time. Always be polite, but make sure that the people you speak to are informed about these human rights violations and inhumane treatment, and that they hear your demand for the investigation of prison staff who commit abuse.
